What is E.S.E. Pre-K?

The Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Exceptional Student Education (E.S.E.) Pre-K Program provides services for children with disabilities from ages 3 to 5. Children must be 3 years of age and have been evaluated to be eligible to enter the pre-k program.

Pre-K children participate in a variety of educational activities during the school day, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Pre-K children are active learners. They discover thier world by direct experiences. Within our classrooms, the children are provided with opportunities to manipulate materials, choose activities, solve problems, use small and large muscles, and take care of one's own needs within a carefully planned daily routine.

Pre-K programs have been established to encourage the mainstreaming and inclusion of children with disabilities and non-disabled children, ages 3 to 5 years. The reverse mainstream model is one of the models implemented at our school to provide age appropriate role models in a self-contained classroom setting. An E.S.E. teacher and an E.S.E. paraprofessional in a Varying Exceptionalities classroom provide an educational program for ten children with disabilities and four non-disabled four year old children.
